If you need to get rid of fleas this is probably because you have an infestation of fleas in your home, fleas are small parasites who feed off a host, if you have a flea bite it will be from where a flea has fed on you, a single flea may bite you in several places to feed in one night.
The flea bite will be a small red mark often with a scab on the top, the bite is itchy and inflamed, you can use creams to control the itchiness, the bites are similar to those you may receive from mosquitoes, and like with a mosquito bite the flea bites can spread disease.
You need to remove the flea infestation from your home as soon as you can, the first step is to work out where the fleas are getting into your home, if you have a pet the chances are that the fleas are hitching a ride into your house in the fur of your cat or dog.
Using an anti flea medication such as Front line or Advantage will control the fleas on your pets, it will stop these fleas breading and will kill the fleas that bite your pets, this is a good first step and if you do not have an infestation is a good way of managing the risk and reducing the chances of getting a flea infestation in the first place.
However if you already have fleas in your home you need to get rid of fleas as soon as you can to reduce the risk of being bitten, the fleas love to live in carpets and in the soft furnishings of your home as they are warm and there are plenty of hosts, such as your pets, you or your family for the fleas to feed on.
Using flea foggers or flea bombs to clear out the fleas that have already entered your home is the fast and I believe the most effective way of killing off the flea threat to your families health. Flea foggers use a toxic and flammable gas that penetrates all areas of the infected room, it kills the fleas that are in carpets, on curtains and in your furniture, it also penetrates the shells of the eggs that the fleas have laid in your home, it will kill the unhatched fleas in the eggs to stop these reaching maturity and reinfecting your house with more fleas.
Once you have taken measures to prevent fleas from entering your home, then next step you need to take in order to get rid of fleas is to kill the fleas that are now inside. This can be done in several ways. While slow, the anti-flea medications you should be feeding your pet will help kill them off. The medication is designed to be poisonous to fleas while safe for your pet. A faster, though more toxic way, is to use a flea bomb or fogger in all of the rooms of your house. It takes around five hours per room to prepare it, use the bomb, and air it out for use again. If you spend a weekend bombing your home, you can expect to see a large decrease in flea bites.
Once you have cleared your home of fleas you can use natural and non toxic herbs, such as Pennyroyal, Citronella and Lemongrass at entry points of your home to discourage the fleas reentering on their own, ceder chips are also used outside the home as fleas do not like to cross the ceder, fleas can jump a long way and travel a great distance in a day so if you can put barriers such as this in their way and ensure your pets have followed a course of Advantage or Front line you will reduce the chances of the fleas reentering your home and you will only have to get rid on flees once.
